About the Band

Band members range in age from 18 to 80 year olds. Our rehearsal and concert format allows local musicians (and those who are in the Keys as short-term residents) to participate on a month-by-month basis. Visiting musicians are welcome to sit in on rehearsals.  Some of our members haven’t played since high school or college, some are retired professional musicians and some are just starting out.  They play the portion of the music they are capable of and continue to build skills each month.

Rehearsals are Monday nights, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Key Largo School Band Room, MM 105, Oceanside. Our repertoire includes traditional concert band music, popular music, show tunes, and marches.

During concerts, the Band offers opportunities for other musical groups who may not have a regular venue in which to perform. The Island Dulcimers, the Silver Shores Singers, and the Keys Breeze Barbershop Quartet have participated in our concerts. We also showcase other concert events in the Keys such as The Christmas Project, Marathon Community Theater and the Key Players.

During the school year, Community Band members tutor young music students, offering one on one or small group instruction. Our Young Musician Award program provides gift certificates for lessons and supplies to students who rehearse and perform with the Band at the Young Musicians Concert. We also support college bound students who will major in music.  Several members of the Band have tutored music students under the Music Mentors Program funded by the Monroe Council of the Arts and the Ocean Reef Foundation. Many of these students have joined the Band and perform side by side with older experienced musicians.  Many return to the band as adult performers.

Young Musicians 2011

A grant from the Hurlburt Foundation enabled the Band to purchase a set of rhythm instruments, as well as music designed to appeal to young audience members. Children in the audience actively join in with the Band on selected numbers. Our Young Musicians Concert is specifically designed to introduce young children to concert band music and the joys of live music performance.

The Band is incorporated as a charitable, 501 (c)(3) organization in Florida under the name Florida Keys Community Concert Band, registration number CH31959. The Monroe County Tourist Development Council has provided funding for advertising and publicity. We have received additional funding from local foundations, such as the Hurlburt Family Foundation, the Einstein Fund, and The Coldwell Banker Schmitt Foundation. We gratefully accept donations from individuals. All donations to the Band are tax-deductible.
